The search was suspended because of nightfall.
Sergei Viktorov said that only the three helicopter crew members were found inside the aircraft, and the remaining passengers were on the ground in the snow when the avalanche occurred. The avalanche buried 14 German tourists and one other passenger.
"During the avalanche, only the crew members were on board the helicopter; the tourists at that time were [on the ground] nearby," Viktorov said.
A spokeswoman from the Emergencies Ministry"s Kamchatka region, Tatyana Muravyova, said that 10 people were confirmed dead in the avalanche. She said only eight people survived the avalanche.
The German tourists had arranged with a tour agency an extreme snowboarding recreation day.
According to Viktorov, a total of 18 people were initially on board the MI-8 Hip helicopter that failed to make radio contact at a specified time. Search operations were immediately started and another helicopter pilot spotted the
