Two patrol officers responded to a call at an apartment building in the town 65 kilometers north of Moscow but when they arrived at the location they were shot. A 25-year-old senior lieutenant died at the scene while his 40-year-old colleague was seriously injured.
"One of the suspects in the attack on the policemen has been detained after a chase. He had been drinking heavily. No weapon was found on him. The identity of the second [suspect] has been established. He is being sought," the spokesman said.
He said every police officer in the city was looking for the suspect.
The spokesman said the patrol officers arrived at the building just after 7 p.m. following reports that a young woman was being robbed.
"The policemen were shot with a hunting rifle," he said.
A source told RIA Novosti earlier that the woman was being sexually assaulted. He said the shooting occurred in the entryway.
Investigators are working at the crime scene.
