Easter celebrations in Moscow were held...

"The celebrations were peaceful, the situation is under control," a city police spokesman said.

Almost 177,000 worshippers attended services and processions at 269 churches in Moscow overnight, including President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin at the main Christ the Savior Cathedral.

The spokesman said a special operations center was coordinating the work of the various security services, and extra police patrols were on duty at crowded public places, cathedrals and churches, and city cemeteries.

Moscow police have been working at heightened levels of security since last Monday"s suicide bombings at the Lubyanka and Park Kultury metro stations, which killed 40 people and injured dozens more.

Security was tightened for Easter services across Russia, with about 114,000 police and interior troops on duty, the Interior Ministry reported on Sunday.

It said there were no serious breaches of public order during the overnight celebrations,
