Adults in Scotland annually drink the equivalent...

In line with the study, this is 25% more than the amounts the English and Welsh drink. A total of 50.5 million liters of pure alcohol were sold in Scotland in 2009, which means each grown-up Scot on the average drank 12.2 liters of alcohol, which is the same as 46 bottles of vodka, 537 pints of beer or 130 bottles of wine.

The Scottish authorities have been pushing for a minimum price for alcohol to improve the drinking situation.

"We believe setting a minimum price for alcohol, while not the whole answer, is a key weapon in the battle against alcohol misuse," Sky News quoted Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland"s health secretary, as saying.
