A Peruvian surfer has taught his pet alpaca...

Domingo Pianezzi, 44, has spent a decade training dogs and cats to surf with him on his board. He has also surfed with a hamster and a parrot.

He came up with the idea to hit the waves with his alpaca, Pisco, while at a competition in Australia, where he saw people surfing with kangaroos and koalas.

"So I thought that, as a Peruvian, it would be interesting to surf with a unique animal that represents Peru," Pianezzi said.

He has spent several months slowly introducing Pisco to the waters of the Pacific Ocean, and saw his efforts rewarded after the pair caught three waves on a 3-meter longboard on Tuesday at a small beach south of Lima, Peru"s capital.

Pisco, wearing a lifejacket and crouching on the board, was an unlikely sight at the beach, but proved quite a hit with the locals.

The alpaca is a domesticated South American highland animal resembling a small llama in appearance.
